This single-family for rent in the Manor section of the Prospect Lefferts Garden Historic District has retained most of its original features while a renovation also opened up parts of the parlor floor and updated the kitchen and bathrooms.
Designed by prolific Brooklyn architect Benjamin Driesler, the circa 1910 barrel-front house at 206 Rutland Road has a brownstone facade with pilasters and panels with cast foliate and shield motifs. Inside, stained glass, parquet floors, moldings, the wood stair, and pocket doors are among the original features.
The vestibule has period tile, and most of the woodwork throughout is varnished, although some is painted white. Open to the stair, the middle parlor or stair hall has a paneled wainscot, and columned wood mantel with green tile flanked by original built-in bookcases.
Pocket doors with brightly colored stained glass lead to the rear dining room. The latter is open to the side kitchen and its period dish cupboards are still in place, the floor plan shows. They match the ones in the stair hall, a mirror between the dining room’s windows reveals.
The parquet continues into the roomy galley kitchen, which mixes white lacquer and wood cupboards. There is a dishwasher, wine fridge, and a 36-inch-wide fridge. There is a door to the “new deck” and “garden,” according to the listing, though neither are pictured.
Upstairs are three good size bedrooms (although one is more suited to a twin bed) and two full bathrooms, one en suite. A fourth bedroom has been turned into a flexible space with two closets for the largest bedroom. The latter has a bay window and overlooks the street.
The English basement looks tidy with vinyl faux wood flooring and exposed brick and beams. The third full bathroom and a laundry room are on this level. There are six closets in the house.
While the listing is mum on the topic of air conditioning, a mini-split unit is visible in one of the photos, and a ceiling fan can be spotted in one of the bedrooms.
Listed by Bill Sheppard of Brown Harris Stevens, the house is priced at $8,750 a month. What do you think?
